Reiki is a Japanese technique for relaxation and stress reduction that promotes healing.  It is based on the idea that an unseen energy flows through and around us and is what causes us to be alive.  If one’s energy is low, we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.  The word Reiki, (pronounced Ray-key) is made up of two Japanese words.  ”Rei” means universal, or present everywhere, the word “Rei” as it is used in Reiki is more accurately interpreted as spiritual consciousness.  The word “Ki” means life energy, also known as life force energy”.

While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion.  Reiki is not dependent on belief and will work whether you believe in it or not. Reiki is also a Japanese holistic energy healing system that is gentle and noninvasive and yet yields powerful results for the body, mind and spirit.

Reiki History

The Reiki System of Healing was rediscovered in the mid-19th century by a Japanese scholar, Dr Mikao Usui.  It was brought to the United States by a Hawaiian woman of Japanese descent, Hawayo Takata, who learned the method in 1930 and traveled extensively to the U.S. mainland and other parts of the world teaching and giving Reiki treatments. Before Mrs.Takata’s passing on December 11, 1980, she had initiated twenty-two Reiki Masters, a term in the West for Reiki teachers.  These twenty-two Masters began teaching others and so the sharing of Reiki continues.  Reiki can be learned as a self-healing method by everyone and can benefit many circumstances.

A Reiki Session

During a Reiki session the client lies fully clothed on a massage table while receiving light touch.  The practitioner will place their hands on or slightly above the body depending upon the client’s wishes. There is no need to say anything but you are free to let the practitioner know about issues you are working on or health problems. Reiki is safe, it is a peaceful, non-intrusive alternative healing method that supports other alternative healing methods as well as traditional medicine. Verified by recent scientific experiments, doctors are now considering the role it plays in the functioning of the immune system and healing process enhancing the body’s natural ability to heal.  Several hospitals & hospices have now acknowledged the benefits of Reiki and are offering it to their patients.  Also, it can be a useful tool to be used before & after surgery.
